Alas, it seems that these Club Handling days at Dunsfold - where Top Gear is filmed - may be no more thanks to regulations and red tape! We just have to hope that the L&Club can find another suitable location, as these days are huge fun, and a great time to relax and enjoy a bit of hooning doing stuff which you really shouldn't do either on the road or on track.
| Apart from the standing around, a wet day is equally fun on this sort of day. | | | Cones beckon! | | | Can you guess what is under this??!! | | | What about this one? | | | Usually in morning and afternoon sessions, these days are always popular. | | |
| Steve Mell, the organiser of these days, gives a thorough briefing before each session, detailing the order of the day and most importantly, safety. | | | A motley band of Club members volunteer as marshals to support Steve and make the day possible. |
| Caterham turned up to give passenger rides around the Top Gear track in their new (then) CSR race car. | | | | | | | Even a Porsche has some uses on a day like this. |
| The marshals find their posts! | | | And we are off.... | | |
There are usually 2 runs up the runway, next to each other - one is a 0-60 where you can strap on some timing gear and see how well you can do, and running in parallel, a slalom - where once you remember where you go, you can get faster and faster throughout the session - especially if the track dries out. The frame on the car is a tyre rack, and it provided a great platform to hang my bullet cam off and get some unusual angle shots from.
| This is a still from an on-board movie showing the rear wheel spinning. | | | Note the ludicrous, boom-mounted, bullet camera position! | | | Wet n' windy! | | | Adil well wrapped up against the sun...sorry, rain. | | | Arnie has installed a tennis ball launcher under his bonnet...not sure why?! |
Next session briefing.
| All sorts of vehicles turn up.... | | | ...but not sure I am ever really going to fit this particular one! |
